What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic full-body oil massage therapy performed using warm medicated oils selected according to the patient's Prakriti and health condition. It is one of the most nourishing and rejuvenating therapies in Ayurveda — deeply pacifying Vata dosha, strengthening the body, and promoting overall health and longevity.

About Abhyanga

The word Abhyanga in Sanskrit means "to apply oil in a loving manner." This ancient therapy involves the systematic application of warm medicated herbal oils over the entire body using specific strokes and pressures by one or two trained therapists working in synchrony. Abhyanga is not merely a massage — it is a deeply therapeutic procedure that nourishes all seven body tissues (Saptadhatus), calms the nervous system, improves blood and lymphatic circulation, and promotes the elimination of metabolic waste from the body. According to Ayurvedic classics, daily Abhyanga is described as a cornerstone of the ideal daily routine (Dinacharya) and is recommended for maintaining health, preventing disease, and prolonging a healthy lifespan. At Ayush Ayurveda, each Abhyanga session is preceded by a brief consultation to select the most suitable medicated oil and customise the treatment to your specific health needs.

Abhyanga Process

1

Pre-Therapy Consultation & Oil Selection

Before the therapy, your Prakriti, current health condition, and specific concerns are assessed by our doctor. The most appropriate medicated oil — such as Sesame oil, Dhanwantaram Taila, Mahanarayana Taila, or Bala Taila — is selected to maximise the therapeutic benefits of the session.

2

Oil Warming & Preparation

The selected medicated oil is gently warmed to a comfortable temperature. Warm oil penetrates the skin layers far more effectively than cold oil, allowing the herbal active ingredients to reach the deeper tissues, joints, and nervous system for maximum therapeutic effect.

3

Full Body Medicated Oil Massage

The patient lies comfortably on the Droni (traditional wooden treatment table). Warm medicated oil is applied over the entire body from head to toe using specific Ayurvedic strokes — long strokes over the long bones and circular strokes over the joints — applied with consistent, rhythmic pressure by our trained therapists for 45 to 60 minutes.

4

Swedana — Post-Massage Steam Therapy

Abhyanga is typically followed by Swedana (herbal steam therapy). The steam opens the pores, enhances absorption of the medicated oil into the deeper tissues, promotes sweating to eliminate toxins, relieves muscle stiffness and joint pain, and amplifies the overall therapeutic benefits of the oil massage.

5

Post-Therapy Rest & Follow-up Care

After the steam, the patient rests for a short period to allow the body to fully absorb the treatment benefits. Dietary guidelines, activity restrictions for the day, and recommendations for a course of sessions are provided. Regular Abhyanga as part of a treatment course yields the most profound and lasting results.
