Shirodhara is one of the most powerful and deeply relaxing therapies in Ayurveda. Warm medicated oil is continuously poured in a gentle, steady stream over the forehead — the seat of the nervous system. It profoundly calms the mind, balances the doshas, and restores inner peace and mental clarity.
The word Shirodhara comes from two Sanskrit words — "Shiro" meaning head and "Dhara" meaning flow or stream. In this therapy, a continuous stream of warm medicated oil, buttermilk, or herbal decoction is poured steadily over the forehead in a slow, rhythmic manner for a specific duration. This gentle, uninterrupted flow creates a deeply meditative state in the recipient, calming the hypothalamus and the entire central nervous system. Shirodhara is particularly effective for conditions rooted in aggravated Vata and Pitta doshas affecting the mind and nervous system. At Ayush Ayurveda, we use carefully selected medicated oils tailored to each patient's Prakriti and condition, ensuring maximum therapeutic benefit from every session.
Before the therapy begins, our doctor assesses your Prakriti, current health condition, and specific concerns. Based on this, the most suitable medicated oil or liquid (Taila, Takra, or Kwatha) is selected to maximise the therapeutic benefits of the session.
The session typically begins with a gentle Abhyanga (full or head-and-shoulder oil massage) to relax the muscles, open the body's channels, and prepare the nervous system to receive the deeper benefits of the Shirodhara stream that follows.
The patient lies comfortably on the Droni (treatment table). Warm medicated oil is filled in a specialised Shirodhara vessel suspended above the forehead. The oil is then poured in a continuous, pendulum-like stream directly over the Ajna (third eye) point on the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes, inducing a profound state of relaxation.
After the oil stream is complete, the patient rests quietly for a few minutes to allow the nervous system to fully absorb the therapeutic effects. A gentle scalp and head massage is then performed to further nourish the hair roots and enhance the calming benefits of the therapy.
After the session, specific dietary and lifestyle guidelines are recommended to prolong and enhance the effects of the therapy. A course of multiple Shirodhara sessions is typically advised for chronic conditions, with regular follow-up to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
