Nasya

Nasya
Our Therapies

What is Nasya?

Nasya is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which medicated oils, herbal juices, or powders are administered through the nostrils. It is the primary treatment for all diseases of the head, neck, and sense organs — deeply cleansing the nasal passages, sinuses, and brain channels while balancing the doshas above the shoulders.

About Nasya

According to Ayurveda, the nose is the gateway to the brain and consciousness — "Nasahi Shiraso Dwaram," meaning the nose is the door to the head. Nasya therapy utilises this pathway to deliver potent medicinal substances directly to the brain, nervous system, and all structures of the head and neck region. It is one of the five classical Panchkarma procedures and is considered the most effective treatment for all conditions affecting the area above the shoulders. Nasya clears accumulated Kapha and toxins from the nasal passages, sinuses, and respiratory tract; nourishes and strengthens the nervous system; improves the functioning of all five sense organs; and is remarkably effective for chronic sinusitis, migraines, cervical spondylosis, facial paralysis, hair loss, and mental health conditions. At Ayush Ayurveda, the type of Nasya administered is carefully selected based on each patient's Prakriti, Vikriti, and specific health condition.

Nasya Process

1

Pre-Therapy Consultation & Medicine Selection

Our doctor assesses your Prakriti, Vikriti, and specific health condition to determine the most appropriate type of Nasya — whether Pratimarsha (daily), Marsha (therapeutic), Brumhana (nourishing), Shodhana (cleansing), or Shamana (palliative) — and selects the suitable medicated oil, herbal juice, or powder accordingly.

2

Purvakarma — Face & Neck Preparation

The face, forehead, neck, and shoulders are gently massaged with warm medicated oil (Snehana) followed by mild steam fomentation (Swedana) using a warm cloth or steam. This relaxes the facial muscles, opens the nasal and sinus channels, and prepares the tissues to receive and absorb the Nasya medicine effectively.

3

Nasya Administration

The patient lies on the treatment table with the head tilted slightly backward. The selected medicated oil or herbal preparation is instilled drop by drop into each nostril using a dropper while the patient breathes normally. The dose and duration are determined by the type of Nasya being administered and the patient's specific condition.

4

Post-Administration Massage & Inhalation

Immediately after the medicine is administered, the soles of the feet, palms, neck, and shoulders are gently massaged to help distribute the medicine. The patient is then asked to breathe deeply and may perform gentle gargling with warm water to clear any medicine that has drained into the throat.

5

Rest & Post-Therapy Guidelines

After the procedure, the patient rests quietly for 15 to 20 minutes. Specific post-Nasya guidelines are provided — including avoiding cold water, cold food, cold air exposure, and excessive talking immediately after the procedure. A course of 7 to 14 days is recommended for chronic conditions with regular follow-up to assess progress.
