Panchkarma is an ancient Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy that deeply cleanses the body, restores the balance of doshas, and promotes overall well-being. It is a comprehensive five-step purification process that eliminates accumulated toxins (Ama) from the body at the deepest cellular level.
The word Panchkarma means "five actions" or "five treatments" in Sanskrit. It is considered the cornerstone of Ayurvedic therapeutic practice and one of the most powerful healing systems in the world. Panchkarma works by first preparing the body through oleation (Snehana) and sudation (Swedana) therapies, which loosen and mobilise accumulated toxins from tissues. These toxins are then eliminated through five classical purification procedures — Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal administration), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting). The complete Panchkarma process not only detoxifies the body but also strengthens the immune system, reverses the ageing process, and restores vitality and inner balance. At Ayush Ayurveda, every Panchkarma programme is individually designed based on the patient's Prakriti, health condition, and treatment goals.
Before the main procedures begin, the body is prepared through Snehana (internal and external oleation with medicated oils and ghee) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy). This loosens deep-seated toxins from the tissues and brings them to the digestive tract for elimination.
Vamana is a controlled, medically supervised emesis (vomiting) procedure specifically designed to eliminate excess Kapha dosha and accumulated toxins from the upper digestive tract, stomach, and respiratory system. It is highly effective for conditions like asthma, allergies, and skin diseases.
Virechana involves the administration of herbal purgative medicines to eliminate excess Pitta dosha and toxins from the liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and blood. It is the primary treatment for Pitta-related disorders including skin conditions, liver problems, and inflammatory diseases.
Basti is considered the most important of all Panchkarma procedures. Medicated oils, herbal decoctions, or ghee are administered through the rectum to cleanse and nourish the colon, eliminate Vata dosha imbalances, and treat a wide range of disorders including joint diseases, neurological conditions, and chronic constipation.
Nasya involves instillation of medicated oils or herbal preparations through the nostrils to cleanse the head, neck, and sinuses. Following all main procedures, Paschatkarma (post-treatment care) is carried out — including a specific diet, rest, and gentle herbal supplements — to consolidate the results and prevent recurrence of disease.
