Agnikarma is an ancient Ayurvedic para-surgical thermal cauterisation therapy in which controlled heat is applied to specific painful points on the body using specialised metallic or herbal probes. It provides immediate and long-lasting relief from chronic pain conditions that do not respond to other treatments — safely and without side effects.
The word Agnikarma comes from Sanskrit — "Agni" meaning fire and "Karma" meaning procedure or action. It is one of the most powerful para-surgical procedures described in the Ayurvedic classics, with Acharya Sushruta stating that conditions cured by Agnikarma do not recur. In this therapy, a specialised Agnikarma probe — made of metals such as gold, silver, copper, or iron, or from herbal materials such as Pippali or Shalaka — is heated to a precise temperature and applied in quick, controlled touches to the specific Marma points or painful areas on the body. The therapeutic heat generated by this procedure destroys the pathological tissues causing pain, stimulates the body's natural healing response, improves local blood circulation, and permanently corrects the Vata dosha imbalance at the site of pain. Agnikarma is particularly effective for musculoskeletal conditions that have not responded to conventional treatments and is performed with utmost precision and care at Ayush Ayurveda.
A thorough clinical evaluation is performed by our doctor to assess the nature, location, and severity of the pain, along with the patient's Prakriti and overall health status. The suitability of Agnikarma for the specific condition is confirmed, and the most appropriate type of probe and procedure technique is selected based on the diagnosis.
The affected area is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the procedure. A local anaesthetic cream may be applied to the site to minimise discomfort during the procedure. The patient is positioned comfortably and the precise painful points or Marma points to be treated are carefully identified and marked by the doctor.
The selected Agnikarma probe is heated to the precise therapeutic temperature over a flame. The heated probe is then applied in quick, controlled touches to the identified painful points on the skin — creating small, precise therapeutic burns at the site. The procedure is performed with great accuracy and speed to ensure maximum benefit with minimal discomfort.
Immediately after the procedure, a cooling Ayurvedic herbal preparation — such as Ghee, Coconut oil, or a medicated ointment — is applied to the treated area to soothe the skin, reduce heat, prevent infection, and promote rapid healing of the cauterised points. Specific wound care instructions are provided to the patient for home follow-up.
The patient is advised to rest the treated area for a specific period and follow all post-procedure guidelines including dietary restrictions, activity limitations, and wound care instructions. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to assess healing and the degree of pain relief. Multiple sessions may be recommended depending on the severity and chronicity of the condition.
