Udvartan is a classical Ayurvedic herbal powder massage therapy in which a specially prepared mixture of medicinal herbal powders is applied over the entire body using firm, upward strokes. It effectively reduces excess Kapha and Meda (fat), improves skin texture, stimulates fat metabolism, and leaves the skin deeply cleansed, toned, and glowing.
The word Udvartan in Sanskrit means "to move upward" — referring to the characteristic upward strokes used in this therapy, which go against the direction of hair growth. Udvartan is unique among Ayurvedic therapies in that it uses dry or semi-dry herbal powders rather than oils, making it particularly effective for conditions involving excess Kapha dosha, obesity, water retention, and sluggish lymphatic circulation. The herbal powders used in Udvartan are carefully selected for their Kapha-reducing, fat-metabolising, and skin-cleansing properties. When applied with firm pressure in the characteristic upward strokes, they create significant friction that generates heat in the tissues — breaking down subcutaneous fat deposits, stimulating the lymphatic system, exfoliating dead skin cells, and improving overall skin health. Udvartan is an integral part of Ayurvedic weight management programmes and is equally valued as a standalone skin beautification therapy.
Our doctor assesses your Prakriti, health condition, skin type, and treatment goals before the session. Based on this, a customised herbal powder mixture is prepared — commonly using ingredients such as Triphala, Mustard, Neem, Lodhra, Haridra, Chickpea flour, and other Kapha-reducing herbs suited to your specific needs.
The selected herbal powders are combined in specific proportions. Depending on the type of Udvartan — Ruksha (dry) or Snigdha (with oil) — the powders are either kept dry or mixed with a small amount of warm medicated oil or herbal liquid to form a paste. The mixture is prepared fresh before each session for maximum potency.
The patient lies on the Droni (treatment table). The herbal powder mixture is applied over the entire body and massaged vigorously using firm, upward strokes against the direction of hair growth by our trained therapist. The treatment covers all body parts from neck to feet and typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes.
Immediately after the powder massage, the patient undergoes Swedana (herbal steam therapy). The steam opens the pores, enhances the absorption of herbal actives into the deeper tissues, promotes sweating to eliminate toxins and metabolic waste, and amplifies the fat-reducing and detoxifying effects of the Udvartan treatment.
After the steam, the herbal powder residue is gently removed and the body is cleansed with warm water. The patient rests briefly before dressing. Dietary guidelines — particularly a Kapha-reducing diet — along with exercise recommendations and a course schedule are provided for best and lasting results.
