What is Kati Basti?

Kati Basti is a specialised Ayurvedic therapy in which warm medicated oil is retained over the lower back within a boundary made of dough. It deeply nourishes the lumbar vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and surrounding muscles — providing powerful relief from lower back pain, stiffness, and degenerative spinal conditions.

About Kati Basti

The word Kati Basti comes from Sanskrit — "Kati" meaning lower back or waist, and "Basti" meaning to retain or hold. In this therapy, a ring-shaped boundary is carefully prepared using a special dough made from black gram flour, which is placed firmly on the lower back region. Warm medicated oil — selected according to the patient's condition and Prakriti — is then poured inside this boundary and maintained at a therapeutic temperature for a specific duration. The sustained heat and the medicinal properties of the oil deeply penetrate the lumbar muscles, sacral joints, and intervertebral discs, reducing inflammation, relieving nerve compression, and restoring flexibility and strength to the lower back. Kati Basti is highly effective for a wide range of conditions including lumbar spondylosis, disc prolapse, sciatica, and chronic lower back pain, and is often combined with Abhyanga and Swedana for maximum benefit.

Kati Basti Process

1

Pre-Therapy Consultation & Oil Selection

Our doctor evaluates the patient's condition through clinical examination and Nadi Parikshan to understand the nature and severity of the back problem. The most suitable medicated oil — such as Mahanarayana Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or Dhanwantaram Taila — is selected based on the specific diagnosis and Prakriti.

2

Preparatory Abhyanga

A gentle medicated oil massage is applied to the lower back and surrounding areas before the main procedure. This preparatory step relaxes the muscles, improves local circulation, and prepares the tissues to absorb the therapeutic oil more effectively during the Basti procedure.

3

Dough Boundary Preparation & Placement

The patient lies comfortably in a prone position (face down). A ring-shaped boundary approximately 3 to 4 inches high is prepared using black gram dough and placed firmly on the lower back (lumbar region), ensuring it is leak-proof. The area within the boundary is cleaned and prepared for oil retention.

4

Warm Oil Retention

Warm medicated oil is slowly poured into the dough boundary and maintained at a consistent therapeutic temperature for 30 to 45 minutes. The oil is periodically replaced or rewarmed to ensure it remains at the optimal temperature throughout the session, allowing deep penetration into the lumbar tissues.

5

Post-Therapy Swedana & Follow-up

After the oil is removed, a gentle local massage is performed followed by herbal steam (Swedana) to further enhance oil absorption and relieve residual stiffness. A course of 7 to 14 sessions is typically recommended for chronic conditions, with dietary and activity guidelines provided for best results.
