Janu Basti is a specialised Ayurvedic knee therapy in which warm medicated oil is retained over the knee joint within a boundary made of dough. It deeply nourishes the knee cartilage, ligaments, and surrounding tissues — providing powerful relief from knee pain, stiffness, and degenerative joint conditions.
The word Janu Basti comes from Sanskrit — "Janu" meaning knee and "Basti" meaning to retain or hold. In this therapy, a ring-shaped boundary is carefully prepared using black gram flour dough and placed firmly around the knee joint. Warm medicated oil — selected according to the patient's condition and Prakriti — is then poured inside this boundary and maintained at a therapeutic temperature for a specific duration. The sustained heat and medicinal properties of the oil penetrate deeply into the knee joint, cartilage, synovial membrane, and surrounding ligaments and tendons — reducing inflammation, relieving pain, lubricating the joint, and restoring its natural mobility and strength. Janu Basti is highly effective for conditions such as osteoarthritis, knee pain, ligament injuries, and post-surgical knee rehabilitation, and is often combined with Abhyanga and Swedana for comprehensive results.
Our doctor evaluates the patient's knee condition through clinical examination and Nadi Parikshan to understand the nature and severity of the problem. The most suitable medicated oil — such as Mahanarayana Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or Dhanwantaram Taila — is selected based on the diagnosis and Prakriti.
A gentle medicated oil massage is applied to the knee and surrounding areas before the main procedure. This relaxes the muscles, improves local blood circulation, reduces acute pain, and prepares the joint tissues to absorb the therapeutic oil more deeply during the Basti procedure.
The patient lies comfortably in a supine position (face up) with the knee slightly elevated. A ring-shaped boundary approximately 3 to 4 inches high is prepared using black gram dough and placed firmly around the knee joint, ensuring it is completely leak-proof before the oil is poured.
Warm medicated oil is slowly poured into the dough boundary over the knee and maintained at a consistent therapeutic temperature for 30 to 45 minutes. The oil is periodically replaced or rewarmed to ensure it stays at the optimal temperature, allowing deep penetration into the knee joint and surrounding tissues.
After the oil is removed, a gentle local massage is performed followed by herbal steam (Swedana) to further enhance oil absorption and relieve residual stiffness. A course of 7 to 14 sessions is typically recommended for chronic conditions, along with dietary and activity guidelines for sustained improvement.
